Type Locality and Naming

It was proposed by Xiang Liwen, Lin Baoyu and Nan Yunshan in 1960 and published in Atlas of Qinling Paleontology in 1963. The type section is located in Wujiahe section, Xiaozhenxiang Township, Mingzhuba District, Langao County, Shaanxi Province. The reference section is at the Bajiaokou section in Ziyang County, Shaanxi Province.

Synonym: (吴家河组)


Lithology and Thickness

It consists of gray, black gray thick-bedded quartzose sandstone and sandy slate with carbonaceous shale. It is 612 m in thickness at the type section.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It is conformably underlain by the Doushangou Fm

Upper contact

The Wujiahe Fm is conformably overlain by the Anpingliang Fm or by the Baiyaya Fm [the bases of these are transgressive].

Regional extent

The slate increases at the upper part of the formation in east area; the limestone and abundant volcanic rocks are exposed near the Langao County. The thickness of the formation is rather steady; it is 474 m thick at the Wafangdian section and is 688 m thick at the Banjiuguan section.

Fossils

It yields graptolite and corals, brachiopods, etc. The following graptolite zones, the Oktavites spiralis zone, the Monoclimacis geinitzi zone and the Cyrtograptus lapworthi zone, can be recognized in this formation.
